A Taxonomy for Productivity Software

In this 1986 article George Schussel lays out a categorization scheme for application development software and describes the differences between the different types of development software. Some of the software types discussed included integrated development workbenches, COBOL system generators, 4GL’s, information center software and decision support software. Most of the popular mid-80’s tools are discussed. Products like Cincom’s Supra, Cullinet’s IDMS/R, Software AG’s ADABAS/NATURAL, Information Builder’s FOCUS and many more are discussed.
